2014 Surly Cross Check

Surly's Cross Check is everybody's favorite jack-of-all-trades. Ride it, race it, commute, camp, or get stoked on 'cross; this bike has seen it all. Crafted of TIG-welded chromoly tubing with a lugged chromoly fork and all the braze-ons to run racks, fenders and bags, this offers comfort, vibration damping, and utility. Bar-end shifters and a wide-range, 18-speed Shimano drivetrain give the bike versatility and mechanical durability. The no-nonsense wheels, built from Alex rims laced to Shimano hubs, tackle the urban jungle or the 'cross course with ease. Powerful Tektro brakes and a pair of grippy, all-terrain Kenda tires round out the bike, keeping the rubber side down and letting you keep the fun under control.

Comments:

Don't let the term "Cyclocross" bike fool you; this isn't so much as a cyclocross bike as it is a "do everything" bike, and that's what I pretty much use it for. I commute to work, grab groceries with it, hit the trails with it, and do light touring with it. The Cross Check will pretty much do anything you throw at it. It rides upright enough for a comfy ride, but is low and aggressive enough for a little speed. It's 4130 steel frame makes it a tad on the heavy side, but the ride is so smooth I've hardly noticed. The folks at Surly picked pretty good components. The Tiagra shifters are smooth and have given me no problems. The bar end shifters took some getting used to. Not sure why Surly placed them there, but it's always easy to tell what gear you are in by touch, and they are crash proof. (so far) Overall, a very well designed and well thought out bike, that's smooth and very dependable.

    Comments:

As a commuter I wanted a do it all bike. I was looking for a dead simple no gimmicks steel framed bike. I wanted lots of room for tires and fenders, brazeons for racks and fenders. this bike is it, comfortable, smooth, fast and handles a load great.

I ride this bike on pavement, dirt, and gravel roads. I was not sure of the durability but have discovered that it is as rugged as a mountain bike, but giving you the speed and comfort of a touring bike. You can not go wrong with the surly crosscheck for both price and function,

      Comments:

Mostly use the Cross Check as a commuter/grocery getter. Attached a Surly Nice Rack to the rear and some Ortlieb Panniers and it can haul a decent amount of goods. I upgraded the shifters from bar ends to Shimano Sora's, threw on a Brooks B17 Special Saddle and some fenders and this thing is bombproof.Things that are not so great about this bike...The stock Ritchey tires suck! [...] (The Ritchey's will serve adequate on the trainer this winter). Also the paint seems to scratch as soon as your bike sees a pole that you are gonna lock it to. I just put stickers over the scratches. It's not the lightest ride in the world, especially with the rack, but for what I use it for the steel ride works just fine.
