Comments:
I have long enjoyed British 3 speed bicycles with IGHs. However, they are appreciating in value enough that for my everyday commuter, I obtained an old Columbia "Sports 3". This has proven to be a very comfy, nice old bike, but- the steel rims were a bit battered, and braking was a gut wrenching failure in rain. Having replaced the original wheels with this, and the companion front wheel, with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, has really made for a much better ride, and less oil on my floor, too!

Comments:
I used this rear wheel along with the corresponding front wheel to modernize my 1970 English 3-speed. I paid the extra fee to have the wheels hand-trued. Between the aluminum rims and modern brakes and pads that I also added, I realized a substantial improvement in braking performance. Before, I had practically zero braking power when riding in the rain, now I can stop the bike with no problem. Sheldon's method for spreading the rear dropouts worked well. The axle diameter was perfect. I skipped the ugly twist shifter and used the vintage trigger shifter already on the bicycle. The modern Sturmey Archer hub shifts smoothly and reliably. My old bicycle and I now fly happily over the rolling hills of the city I live in.
