I've been cycling for 25 years, and Velox cloth rim tape has proven to be the most durable rim tape available. Don't save a few cents or a few grams with alternatives. Velox cloth tape will never fail. It is sort of reusable, but not too many times.

Comments:
This rim tape was recommended when I bought my wheelset from Harris Cyclery. I was a little concerned after reading the only review of the tape that said "My only complaint about Velox rim tape, is that sometimes it doesn't stick so well in the rim."
When I first tried to apply the tape, it didn't stick. I was thinking of rim tape like I'd think of Sellotape or masking tape. This rim tape doesn't work like that.
To install the tape, peel off 25 cm (10 in) and apply half that to the rim. Rub over the applied section multiple times with a thumb or finger. It will adhere more as it's rubbed. Repeat this, but always go over ALL of the previously applied sections with a thumb or finger.
This takes a while, but it's worth it. The tape will stick amazingly well after this is done. It won't even budge.

Comments:
This tape will almost always keep a cyclist from getting a flat that results from the tube pushing against the sharp holes in the outer wall of a wheel rim where the spokes load into. Not as ideal for rims that are single wall, when the spoke nipple butts up against the inner tube. My only complaint about Velox rim tape, is that sometimes it doesn't stick so well in the rim. But its when things don't work as they should our creativity is exercised.
